What is Normal Vaginal Birth?

In normal vaginal birth, the baby travels through the pelvis and vagina, which serve as the passage. For a smooth vaginal birth, there must be compatibility between the baby's size and the vaginal opening.

For example, in women with an android pelvis (a male-type narrow, long pelvic structure with the sacrum tilted forward),the vaginal opening may be less than 10 cm in width, increasing the risk of shoulder dystocia during a normal vaginal delivery. Additionally, women under 150 cm tall and adolescent pregnancies may not have developed the necessary pelvic bone structure to facilitate the desired pelvic width.

Who Has an Easier Time Delivering Vaginally?

The following women are more likely to have an easier time delivering vaginally:

• Women over 150 cm tall
• Women between the ages of 20 and 35
• Women without any other medical conditions such as heart problems, hypertension, or diabetes
• Women who are not overweight
• Women who engage in sports or physical activities
• Women who perform activities like Pilates to loosen their bones before childbirth
• Women who do not neglect pregnancy exercises
• Women who perform Kegel exercises (pelvic floor exercises) to strengthen the pelvic region
• Women who have previously given birth vaginally
• Women whose ultrasound measurements suggest the baby will weigh under 4000 grams
• Women who do not have any tumors or fibroids blocking the vaginal passage

While these factors may contribute to an easier vaginal birth, the answer to who can give birth vaginally is not definitive. Vaginal birth is an active process, and it is not guaranteed until the baby is born. If any health concerns arise for the mother or baby, an emergency cesarean section should be performed. The primary goal should always be the health of both the baby and the mother.
